Hough, Romeyn Beck. The American Woods – Parts I, II, III and IV Exhibited by Actual Specimens and With a Copious Explanatory Text. Lowville NY: Romeyn Beck Hough. Provenance: withdrawn from the Winnipeg Public Library Reference Department, with the usual stamps and call numbers (no pockets, samples unmarked). Books and slipcases show some edgewear, text clean and bright, Vol. IV slipcase missing the clasp. Specimen cards are complete as called-for and samples remain bright and clean, with occasional rippling and fissures as usual for this set. Overall very good. Hardcover.
Part I: Representing Twenty-Five Species by Twenty-Seven Sets of Sections (No’s 1-25; 1910 Third Edition); Part II: Representing Twenty-Five Species by Twenty-Six Sets of Sections (No’s 26-50 with 35 mis-numbered “25”; 1898 Second Edition); Part III: Representing Twenty-Five Species by Twenty-Six Sets of Sections (No’s 51-75; 1900 Second Edition) ; Part IV: Representing Twenty-Five Species by Twenty-Five Sets of Sections (No’s 76-100; 1894 First Edition). A spectacular set, it’s beauty and breadth – and difficulty of production – boggles the mind. Each part consists of a paperback book comprising the explanatory text, accompanied by unbound double-sided framelike specimen cards, each labelled and containing three wafer-thin cross-sections of the corresponding wood’s transverse, radial, and tangential sections; these held by an embossed green cloth hardcover portfolio, all neatly enclosed within a green cloth and marbled paper slipcase decorated with gilt and embossed lettering and decoration, studded at the corners with protective rivets, and satisfyingly secured with a metal clasp.    (#029690)        $3,000.00
